EDP Porto Marathon return brightened with a race record

The return of the EDP Porto Marathon was truly emotional. After the postponement of the 2020 edition, the master athletics event returned to the road even stronger.

The moments that preceded the kick-off were involved by the contagious joy of the athletes for once again being able to participate in the biggest athletics event of the year.

The gun start was done at 9:00 am by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, who also participated in the 6 km walk of the EDP Fun Race. For the 10 km race, the APO Family Race Corrida dos Ossos Saudáveis, the honor to start this race was given to Miguel Aroso, from the Associação Portuguesa de Osteoporose..

Lined up in front of Sea Life Porto, there were about 8.000 participants, for the EDP Porto Marathon (42 km), the APO Family Race Race Corrida dos Ossos Saudáveis (10 km), and the EDP Fun Race (6 km), which, each at their own pace, started this memorable edition of the event.

This year, the Porto and Matosinhos waterfront enchanted athletes from 57 nationalities who enjoyed the beautiful Atlantic front from the Boa Nova Lighthouse to the Freixo bridge, passing the Ponte Móvel of Porto de Leixões, the beautiful Matosinhos waterfront, the Anémona , Foz and Ribeira.

Kenyan Zablon Chumba wins and sets record

The first athlete to cross the finish line was Zablon Chumba at 02:08:58, thus breaking the record for the course that has belonged since 2018 to the Ugandan Robert Chemonges. The runner-up was Bernard Kiprotich (Kenya) who arrived at 02:09:42. The men's podium was closed by Ethiopian Asnake Dubre, with 02:10:14.

Regarding the participation of Portuguese athletes, Carlos Costa (CD S. Salvador do Campo) was the fastest Portuguese in the EDP Porto Marathon, reaching the finish line at 02:22:44, in 8th position in the general classification.

Ethiopians dominate the women's podium

In the women's competition, the first athlete to complete the marathon was Ethiopian Kidsan Alema, at 02:28:01, followed by her counterparts Shewarge Alene Amare and Motu Megersa, with 02:28:16 and 02:28:56, respectively.

At a national level, in a great debut at this distance, Solange Jesus (CD Feirense) was classified as the first Portuguese, with 02:33:21, in the 8th position of the women's general classification.

In addition to the EDP Porto Marathon, the event also included the 10 km long race, the APO Family Race Corrida dos Ossos Saudáveis. In the men's sector, competition for first place was strong all the way to the finish line, with Paulo Rosário (SC Braga) being the winner of this distance, reaching the finish line at 00:29:49. In second place came the athlete from CD Feirense, Fábio Oliveira, with 00:29:54, followed by Ricardo Pereira, from Associação Jardim da Serra, with 00:29:59.

On the female side, the winner was Rafaela Almeida (Sport Comércio e Salgueiros) with 00:34:26. At 00:34:54 came Susana Godinho, from CD Feirense. Athlete Mónica Silva (CD S. Salvador do Campo) came in third with 00:35:25.

To gather all family and friends in a morning of sports and socializing, the EDP Porto Marathon also provided a 6 km walk, the EDP Fun Race.
