EDP Porto Marathon: 21 Years Uniting People, Emotions, and Cities

The 21st edition of the EDP Porto Marathon once again transformed the streets of Porto and Matosinhos into a stage of celebration, achievement, and collective energy. With the start next to Sea Life Porto and a vibrant finish at the Queimódromo, the event gathered thousands of participants, reaffirming itself as one of the most emblematic marathons in Europe.
The starting signal was given by Olympic athlete Fernanda Ribeiro, joined by Susana Feitor, President of the Fundação do Desporto, and Paulo Santos, Vice-President of the IPDJ, marking the beginning of the race at 8:00 a.m. At the signal, 15,000 athletes of all ages and nationalities set off with enthusiasm, beginning a morning defined by emotion, resilience, and a powerful spirit of accomplishment, the essence of the EDP Porto Marathon.
Three Races, One Shared Energy
The event features three races: the 42 km Marathon, the ultimate challenge of endurance and self-overcoming; the EDP 10K, a competitive 10 km course that brought together some of the best national athletes; and the Mimosa/APO 6K, dedicated to families and groups wishing to experience the event in a relaxed and inclusive way.
With a strong elite field in both the Marathon and the EDP 10K, the event once again stood out for its high sporting quality.
Remi Olliveaux and Rafaela Fonseca Win the EDP 10K
The 10 km race showcased once more the strong competitiveness and remarkable determination of its participants. Renowned athletes pushed their limits on a fast and technical course, offering moments of great excitement to the public watching along the route.
In the men’s competition, French athlete Remi Olliveaux claimed victory with a time of 31:34, followed by Ricardo Pereira (EV Peraltafil) with 31:48, and Rui Pedro Silva (CDS Salvador do Campo) in third place with 31:49.
In the women's field, Rafaela Fonseca (Beira-Mar) secured first place with a time of 34:46, ahead of teammate Carla Martinho (Beira-Mar), who finished in 35:02, and Telma Pinho (Team El Comandante), who completed the podium in 35:35.
Representatives of the three municipalities attended the award ceremony: Ricardo Moreira, representing Ágora, Nuno Matos, Councillor of Matosinhos City Council, and Mário Duarte, representing Gaia City Council.
African Elite Leads the Front of the Marathon
The 21st edition of the EDP Porto Marathon was marked by outstanding performances and a remarkable demonstration of endurance and race strategy.
Athletes Aspel Kiptoo Kiprop and Betty Jepleting stood out at the front of the field, delivering a high-level sporting spectacle that captured the attention of all spectators.
In the men's competition, Aspel Kiptoo Kiprop (Kenya) claimed victory with a time of 2:13:17, followed by Joshua Kipsang Kemboi (Kenya) in 2:13:28, and Derara Guta Geleta (Ethiopia) who finished third in 2:13:58.
In the women’s race, Betty Jepleting (Kenya) crossed the finish line first in 2:31:05, with compatriot Leonida Jemwetich Mosop finishing second in 2:31:32, and Meseret Dinke (Ethiopia) completing the podium in 2:32:27.
Top Portuguese Finishers in the Spotlight
Among Portuguese athletes, Carlos Costa (Vizela Corre) was the first national competitor to finish, completing the marathon in 2:16:19. In the women’s field, Carla Sousa (Vitória Sport Clube) was the first Portuguese finisher, with a time of 2:56:16.
Podium Ceremony
The ceremony began with the presentation of commemorative gifts to the Municipalities of Porto, Matosinhos, and Vila Nova de Gaia, acknowledging their essential contribution to the success of the marathon. Joma was also recognised for its continued commitment and shared values throughout the years.
The prize-giving ceremony was attended by Marko Vasic (European Athletics), Benjamim Roux (World Athletics), Susana Feitor (Fundação do Desporto), and Paulo Santos (IPDJ). The awarded athletes received trophies and baskets of organic products offered by Lidl, the official food sponsor, reinforcing the link between sport, health, and well-being.
The first Portuguese finishers were also awarded by Mimosa, highlighting the idea that milk and running are an extraordinary complement to each other.
More than a competition, the EDP Porto Marathon continues to unite generations through sport, promoting positive energy, achievement, and community spirit.
